Abby Has A BFF

It is just so cute. Abby has a BFF (Best Friend Forever) named Emma. They are in the same class at school - they are both in the young toddlers room. They both graduated to the young toddler room after being in the older infant room together as they are very close in age. Emma usually arrives first and gets breakfast started in the play kitchen. When Emma sees Abby come in, she usually says "Abby!", and Abby breaks out into a big smile and waves to Emma. Abby doesn't talk much yet, but she still lets Emma know she is excited to see her. She will reach out her hand to Emma and give her a "high five". Emma usually hands Abby an egg, toast or a croissant, sometimes she even puts in on a plate on a table near the kitchen. Emma and Abby are taking this BFF thing very seriously. Abby will not, under any circumstances, begin her nap unless Emma is also sleeping. If Emma is awake, Abby wants to stay awake. Actually, Abby will not nap at daycare if there is anything of signficance going on. She just does not want to miss ANYTHING. This is not a good thing because then Abby takes a nosedive with her mood about 10 minutes after I pick her up as we rush through dinner and bathtime before she can't keep her eyes open any longer (usually 6:30 or 6:45 PM!!). But, I am thrilled that she loves school as much as she does.

Abby is usually described by her teachers each day as "friendly", "curious", and "happy" and often "chatty". It is all good to me to read and hear those things each day. Most people that meet her for the first time still comment on her beautiful curly hair and the fact that she looks like a little doll (because she is small in stature).

Abby had a haircut once, but it was only a trim. She had her first real haircut a few weeks ago, and we got it cut short. I found a great stylist who is a Latina woman who has the same hair Abby does. She gave her a great haircut, but we had to go short, so it could grown evenly better. Abby looks a lot different with her hair so much shorter, but she is enjoying the no fuss aspect of it. Abby despises having her teeth and hair brushed by anyone other than herself, so if we can limit the amount of time on her hair each morning at this stage in the game, then I am all for it. I do like her with longer hair, but sometimes it hides her adorable face :)

Abby is on her own schedule learning to talk. She points at everything constantly and is very obedient for the most part. We are able to communicate pretty well even though she isn't saying much. She loves bringing everyone their shoes and putting things away or back where they belong. I hope that means she will be a future neat freak!! She does it at home, school, and in music class. I think she is more interested in putting the musical instruments back in the container they are housed in than actually playing with the musical instruments. Music class is basically an aerobic activity for me. The teacher calls Abby a kinetic learner. Code for she is into everything. Sometimes Abby will sit on my lap during class and participate musically, but more often than not, she wants to run around and take the CDs out of the CD player, empty purses, steal keys, carry around the music books from one end of the room to the other, etc. She is in perpetual motion.

Abby's first real, unprompted, word was "dog" when she was 16 months. Not a surprise since she is obssessed with dogs in general. She will also say "hi" sometimes. She really has not said Mommy or Mama yet except she kind of seems to mumble it a bit when she is really upset and tired.

It is fun watching Abby grow and learn so much during these last several months. I can't wait until she starts talking more. She is starting to enjoy being read to and loves sitting in my lap flipping the pages of the book. She really likes it even more when her Grams reads to her because Grams makes more silly sounds when she does it. I expect Grams and Abby to spend a lot of time at Barnes & Noble together over the years just like Grams does with her other two grandchildren. A shared love of books is ALWAYS a good thing.
